Fury's
Wagar dominant in season opener
NIAGARA
FALLS, Ont. - The Niagara Falls Fury opened the
2009 Golden Horseshoe Fastball League season with
a 2-0 victory over Lukes Monday night.
The
game ended up up being a classic Wagar-Berube
pitching duel with Wagar winning 2-0 on some aggressive
Fury offensive that won the game for them.
The
score was 0-0 until the top of the sixth when
Robbie Greatrix turned a routine single into a
double with some very aggressive base-running,
was moved to third and then scored on a failed
suicide bunt again with aggressive base running.
The Fury added another run in the seventh when
Ray Carr led off with a single, was moved to second
on a perfect bunt by Joe MacMaster, went third
on an out at first and scored on a pass ball.
Both
pitchers threw well enough to win. Tom Berube
gave up three hits to Greatrix, Carr and Marcel
Bilodeau while striking out 13 batters. Wagar
gave up two hits to Mark Hall and Will Parent
while registering 18 K's, striking out the side
in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th.
